Meet Maya (they/them)! Crisis Responder and Training Assistant with THRIVE since May 2022
|
|
Maya is a fourth-year University of Toronto student studying psychology and sociology. They are also nonbinary, pansexual, and Indian. In their free time they write, record, and produce music.
What would you like to accomplish in your life, if there were no limitations? "I would want to write a hit album and, overall, feel happy and fulfilled in life."
What systemic barrier would you destroy if you could? "I would want to destroy any policy that stands on and necessitates a gender binary because it erases people outside the binary and makes it harder to acquire services and resources."
Favorite THRIVE memory so far? "I went to the oSTEM conference in Boston to provide in-person crisis support, which was a really cool experience. It gave me new skills and helped me form good relationships with other THRIVE members."

How would you describe the landscape of mental health support for people with multiply marginalized communities? "It is very difficult to find support as a person with multiply marginalized identities in most communities because there simply aren't resources made for you. No matter which marginalized community you are part of, you still feel like a minority."
What would you say to someone who is considering texting THRIVE? "We can't promise to solve your problems, but we are a very supportive and validating space. Sometimes you just need someone who will actively listen."
What makes THRIVE unique? "Our crisis responders each bring distinctly human flair to their work that allows texters to feel like they are speaking to real people. Other lines can feel robotic and formulaic in a way that is potentially unsupportive."
